New Media Design

NMIX 4111E

Although New Media Design was online and asynchronous this semester, it has been one of the most useful classes of my college career. In this class, we explored various elements of design as well as multiple Adobe Creative Cloud apps. I decided to take NMD after I took an intro to graphic design course and I’m so happy I did. This class expanded my understanding of how to make a great piece of graphic art. Also, because of this class, I feel like I can confidently navigate advanced design softwares such as Adobe XD, Photoshop and Illustrator. I cannot wait to keep learning more in the NMI.

Module 1: Tools and Theory

To start off the class, we took a deep dive into basic design principles. We learned how to tell a good piece of work from a great piece of graphic design. In this first module, we were introduced to two Adobe apps: Adobe XD and Illustrator. It was very interesting to learn about design prototypes after taking New Media Production which focused on back-end development. For our Module 1 final project, we worked with a client partner to design a complete style guide for a hypothetical website. This included creating vector logos on illustrator, designing website prototyped on Adobe XD and applying what we learned about the principles of design. Take a look!

Module 2: Photography and Typography

In module 2, we learned about both photography and typography principles. Some principles include color, emphasis, contrast, alignment, proximity, proportion and consistency. This was my favorite module- it was so fun to go around and take pictures of my surroundings. I also enjoyed learning more about Adobe Photoshop and Spark. Although I learned the basics of Photoshop in intro to graphic design, I feel like this class made me truly understand the platform. For the Module 2 assignment, Postcards from the Edge, we had to make a vintage-style postcard that showcased something from your time in quarantine. This assignment challenged me to show off my photography, typography and photoshop skills. Take a look at my finished product below.

Module 3: Final Boss Project

Module 3 was completely dedicated to working on a final project meant to showcase everything we have learned over the semester. Let me tell you, this project definitely lived up to it’s name. As a group, me and two other girls worked together to create a brand for a hypothetical fitness app, Kaló. Throughout this project, we created multiple elements such as a brand website, complete style guide, a logo, personal profiles, promotional elements and a supporting application. After we created all of that, we gave a video presentation explaining our thoughts behind the designs. Check out our final boss project here!
